Here are some of the most important solar panel installation tips:

1. Hire an experienced contractor. You wouldn't hire a plumber without making sure
he or she knew what they were doing, right? I mean, would you risk a more-broken
-than-before toilet? Doubtful. So make sure to do the same with solar panels: they
might be installed at noon on a sunny day, so the sun isn't hard to find. But you
want to maximize the sunlight your house receives throughout the day (and year),
and to do that, you need someone who knows how to predict the strategic angle and
placement that will make that happen.

2. Check the electrical wiring in your home: can it handle solar power? And can the
structure of your house physically handle both the weight of the panels and the
wind-shear potential that will come with them? Checking these things first can save

3. Use a "solar finder" (not your eyes—or recollection of yesterday's sun) to select the
best location for your solar panels.

4. Find a safe place for the power inverter—not outside your bedroom window, for
